Which Computer Should You Actually Buy? A Decision Guide
Somebody asks me which computer to buy roughly once a month. They usually want a brand name back, and they’re a little disappointed when I ask what they do all day instead.
The honest answer to which computer should you buy is that all four of the major options are good now. Genuinely. A $600 laptop today does everything a $2,000 laptop did a decade ago, and the gap between the platforms has narrowed to the point where “which one is best” isn’t really a question with an answer anymore.
So the question worth asking is a different one: which set of compromises will you stop noticing in six months? Every platform makes you give something up. The trick is picking the trade you’ll forget you made, not the one you’ll be irritated by every single week.
Quick summary: For most people, the right computer is the one that matches the phone they already own and the software their work requires — those two constraints usually decide it before price does. The overlooked factor is how long the machine keeps getting security updates, which varies from three years to ten depending on what you buy. Which computer should you buy? Two questions decide it before price does
Before comparing anything, two constraints quietly eliminate most of the field.
What phone do you have? If you use an iPhone and you’re happy with it, a Mac removes a category of small daily friction — messages on your desktop, copy on one device and paste on the other, photos that are just there. If you’re on Android, a Windows PC or a Chromebook does something similar with Google’s account as the connective tissue. This isn’t a small thing. It’s the difference you feel five times a day for years.
Is there one piece of software you can’t work without? If your accountant requires a specific Windows-only program, or your job runs on software that only ships for one platform, that’s the decision. Everything else is commentary. Check this first, because it’s the one factor that can’t be worked around with a bit of adjustment.
If neither of those settles it, you’re genuinely free to choose — and then the interesting stuff matters.
The factor almost nobody checks: how long will it get security updates?
This is the part that gets skipped, and it’s the one I’d look at hardest.
A computer stops being safe to use long before it stops turning on. When security updates end, every flaw discovered afterward stays open permanently. And the update timelines differ enormously between platforms — in ways that aren’t advertised on the box.

Two things in that table deserve more attention than they get.
The ChromeOS clock does not start when you buy the machine. Google’s policy gives ChromeOS devices 10 years of automatic updates, but that decade is measured from the platform release date — the date the underlying hardware family launched, not the day it arrived at your door. Buy a Chromebook built on a three-year-old platform and you’ve bought seven years, not ten. The expiration date is published for every model before you buy, and almost nobody looks it up. Look it up.
Windows 10 got a reprieve, and the date moved. Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates program now runs to October 12, 2027, and enrolling is free if you sync your PC settings, or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30. If you read somewhere that Windows 10 support ended in 2026, that was true when it was written. It isn’t now. (As of July 2026.)
The reason Windows 10 needed an extension at all is Windows 11’s hardware requirements — specifically TPM 2.0, a security chip that a lot of otherwise healthy machines from the late 2010s simply don’t have. Millions of perfectly good computers can’t take the upgrade. That’s the whole story behind the extension.
Apple’s approach is quieter but stricter. Looking at Apple’s own security release list, the versions actively receiving patches are the current macOS plus the two before it. Your Mac hardware may run happily for eight years; the operating system you’re running on it has a shorter shelf life, and eventually Apple stops offering you a newer one.
Ubuntu is the outlier in the other direction. An LTS release gets five years of security maintenance as standard, and Ubuntu Pro — free for personal use — takes that to ten. The current LTS, 24.04, is covered into 2029 as standard and 2034 with Pro. If keeping a machine alive for a decade is the goal, that’s the strongest hand on the table.
The four options, honestly
Windows is the default for a reason: it runs the most software, on the widest range of hardware, at every price point from $400 to $4,000. It’s also the platform where you’ll do the most housekeeping — more settings that matter, more prompts to decline, more preinstalled software to remove on day one. If you want maximum choice and don’t mind maintenance, this is your platform.
Before you buy one, check three things the spec sheet buries: that it has 16 GB of RAM rather than 8, that the storage is SSD rather than a mechanical drive, and that the model supports Windows 11 rather than being a Windows 10 machine on clearance. That last one is why some of those deals look so good.
macOS buys you consistency and a long hardware life, and charges you up front for it. There’s less to configure, less to remove, and the machine you buy is the machine you keep — you generally can’t add memory or storage later, so buy more than you think you need on day one. Repairs run through Apple or an authorized shop. If you own an iPhone and you value not thinking about your computer, the premium is often worth it — though whether it’s worth it for you depends entirely on what you’ll actually do with the machine, which is the last section of this post.
Linux is the one people assume is harder than it is. A modern Ubuntu or Linux Mint desktop is not the command-line ordeal of fifteen years ago; for browsing, documents, email and video it’s unremarkable in the best sense. Where it bites is the specific thing you need that only ships for Windows or Mac — and gaming. Most single-player titles now run well through Steam’s compatibility layer, but a number of competitive multiplayer games use anti-cheat systems that refuse to run on Linux. That list shifts constantly in both directions, so check the specific games you actually play before you switch, not after.
Linux also has the best answer to the old-computer problem. If you have a machine that can’t take Windows 11 and you don’t want to send it to a landfill, this is the move.
ChromeOS deserves more respect than it gets from people who write about computers for a living. If what you actually do is web, email, documents, video and photos, a Chromebook does all of it, boots in seconds, updates itself without asking, and is close to unbreakable by ordinary means. It’s a poor choice if you need serious local software or storage. It’s an excellent choice for a second machine, a student, or anyone who’s been talked into more computer than they need.
And a tablet with a keyboard is a real answer now, not a compromise — an iPad or an Android tablet with a case and a Bluetooth keyboard covers writing, mail, browsing and meetings comfortably. If most of your work is reading and replying, that may be the whole answer. It stops being enough the moment you need to have twelve windows open or run something that only exists as a desktop program.
How to try Linux without committing to anything
This is the part worth knowing, because it costs nothing and removes all the risk from the decision.
You can run a full Linux desktop off a USB stick without installing anything or touching what’s already on the machine. Download the image, write it to a USB drive, boot from it, and you get a working desktop to click around in. Nothing is written to your hard drive. Pull the stick out, restart, and your computer is exactly as it was. Ubuntu publishes step-by-step instructions for making the USB stick from a Windows machine, and the same page exists for doing it from a Mac.
Spend an evening with it. Open your email in the browser, watch something, edit a document, connect your printer. You’ll know within an hour whether it feels fine or annoying, and that hour is worth more than any amount of reading — including this.
If it feels fine, then install it — ideally on an older machine first, not the computer you need working tomorrow morning.
What I’d do
- You have an iPhone, a budget over $1,000, and no unusual software needs. Buy the Mac. The friction you avoid is worth the money.
- You need specific Windows software, or you game seriously. Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, and spend twenty minutes removing what the manufacturer preinstalled.
- Your computer is fine but can’t run Windows 11. Enroll in ESU to buy yourself until October 2027, and use that time to try Linux on it rather than shopping in a panic.
- You mostly browse, read mail and write. A Chromebook, and check the update expiration date before you pay. You’ll spend half what you expected to.
- You want one machine to last ten years. Ubuntu LTS on decent hardware, with Ubuntu Pro switched on. Nothing else on this list will still be getting security patches in 2034.
What I’d skip
Buying more computer than your work actually requires.
The right computer is the one you’ll actually use and can work with. Every platform here has real strengths and real weaknesses, and the honest answer changes depending on what you do all day.
A MacBook Pro with the M5 Max is a superb machine. If you edit 8K video — or 12K, which people are now shooting — it earns its price back in time you don’t spend waiting. If what you do is email, some browsing and a bit of writing, you’re paying for capability you will never touch. Worse, you’ll feel obliged to keep it for nine years because of what it cost.
There’s a second thing worth weighing, and it cuts the other way. Build quality is real. A cheap laptop is mostly plastic, and plastic hinges, ports and lids give out long before metal ones do. Computers are like cars: there’s genuine value in how well a thing is put together, and in the reputation of whoever made it. Paying more for a machine that survives being carried around every day is a completely different decision from paying more for processing power you’ll never touch.
So the question isn’t “how much should I spend.” It’s “what am I spending it on, and how often can I afford to do this again?”
The right answer changes depending on what’s already in your pocket and what your work demands, which is why nobody can give you a brand name without asking questions first. But once you’ve been honest about those two things, the field narrows fast — and whichever one you land on, look up how long it’ll keep getting security updates before you pay. That’s the number that decides how long the thing actually lasts.
