Move Your Router Before You Buy a New One

If one room in your house has weak Wi-Fi, you have probably already been told to buy something. A mesh system. An extender. A newer router with a bigger number on the box than the one you own.

Some of that hardware is worth buying, and there’s one case where I’d replace a router today without much thought. Most of the time, though, it’s solving a problem you could have moved.

The first question isn’t what to buy. It’s where to put your router, and the answer gets obvious the moment you can picture what’s actually coming out of the thing.

Your router is a lamp you can’t see

Not like a lamp. It is one.

Radio waves and visible light are the same phenomenon at different wavelengths. Your eyes register a narrow slice of that spectrum, a few hundred nanometers wide. Wi-Fi sits far outside it, at a wavelength of roughly twelve centimeters. Same physics. Same behavior. Same rules about what gets through and what doesn’t.

So picture a lamp where your router sits. Then picture its shade, because the shape matters more than the brightness.

A router antenna doesn’t glow in a sphere. Cisco’s antenna documentation describes the pattern as one that “resembles a donut” — strong out to the sides, and weak in the one direction nobody expects. Their words: omnidirectional antennas have “poor coverage below the antenna.” Mount one up high and “you see a big hole below the antenna with no coverage.”

Worth reading twice if you have ever put your router on a high shelf and wondered why the desk underneath it is the worst spot in the house.

Quick summary: Wi-Fi is light you can’t see, thrown sideways in a doughnut shape rather than a ball. The floor directly under the router is a dead spot, every wall between you and it costs real signal, and a faster router changes neither one. Ten minutes of moving furniture beats most purchases, with one exception at the end that’s worth acting on today.

What a wall actually costs

Signal loss gets measured in decibels, and the scale is unforgiving: every 3 dB is roughly half the power gone.

Cisco publishes the numbers. Drywall runs about 3 dB. Brick is around 10. Concrete with metal in it is about 12. So one interior wall takes half your signal, a brick chimney leaves you a tenth of it, and a poured concrete wall leaves something closer to a sixteenth.

Now walk the path. Not the distance — the path. Stand in the weak room, look back toward where the router sits, and count what’s actually in the way. Two interior walls is a quarter of what you started with, before you account for anything else in the line.

Plenty of ordinary household things are worse than drywall. Metal reflects rather than passes: a refrigerator, a filing cabinet, ductwork, the backing on a mirror. Water absorbs, which is why a fish tank makes a surprisingly good wall, and why a room full of people measures worse than the same room empty.

Three bands, and the fastest one travels worst

Your router broadcasts on two or three separate bands, and people talk about them constantly without ever saying what the trade is.

The trade is simple. Higher frequency means a shorter wave, and a shorter wave carries more data but gives up ground faster and handles obstacles worse. Cisco puts it in one line: “the higher the frequency, the shorter the radio wave.”

2.4 GHz is the old one, and it’s the traveler. Intel calls it the band with “the longest range and wall-penetration capability of the available bands.” It’s also the most crowded, with only three usable channels shared between your neighbors, your microwave, and a decade of cheap gadgets. Slow, congested, and it reaches the back bedroom. There’s a reason your thermostat and your smart plugs live down here, which is worth knowing before you go turning things off.

5 GHz is the middle, and for most homes it’s the working band. Roughly 500 MHz of spectrum against 2.4’s 70, and enough reach for a normal floor plan.

6 GHz is the new one, and it’s a sprinter. About 1,200 MHz of room, almost no congestion yet, and the shortest legs of the three. Wonderful in the same room. Not the band that saves your back bedroom.

What Wi-Fi 7 does, and what it doesn’t

The generation numbers describe a different thing than the bands do. Wi-Fi 5, 6, 6E, and 7 are about how efficiently devices share the air — how many can talk at once, how cleanly, with how much waiting.

So is a newer router a waste of money? No, and here’s the honest limit on it. Wi-Fi 7 is a real improvement in a house with thirty connected things competing for airtime. The Wi-Fi Alliance lists what it delivers: 320 MHz channels, multi-link operation, 4K QAM. Read that page for what isn’t on the list. There’s no claim about range and no claim about walls. The body that certifies the standard doesn’t say it reaches farther, because it doesn’t.

A newer router helps a crowded house. It will not push a signal through your chimney.

And if you’re waiting on Wi-Fi 8, don’t. The standard is tracking to finish in the first half of 2028, with certification scheduled for January 2028, and its headline feature is reliability rather than raw speed.

Where to put your router: the ten-minute walkthrough

Ten minutes, no purchases, and you can do most of it holding your phone.

Get it off the floor and out of the corner. A router in a corner is throwing half its doughnut into the neighbor’s yard. Chest height or a little above, as close to the middle of the living space as the cable allows — and not on the top shelf, because of the hole underneath.

Take it out of the cabinet. Enclosed shelving, a media console with a smoked-glass door, the closet where the cable comes in. All of it costs you signal for no reason except tidiness.

Measure before and after, from the same spot. Don’t guess. Stand in the weak room, run a speed test, write the number down. Move the router, give your phone a moment to settle, then run it again from exactly the same place. A few feet can be the whole difference, and without a number you will talk yourself into believing it worked.

Point the antennas, if yours has them. External antennas are dipoles, so the doughnut comes out perpendicular to the rod. All vertical covers one floor well. One vertical and one tipped over covers two floors better. Internal antennas are already aimed for upright placement, which is a good reason to leave the router standing the way it was built to stand.

Worth knowing while you’re in there: if the weak room holds smart-home gear, it needs 2.4 GHz to reach it, and that’s the band most likely to survive the trip. Our smart home basics guide covers what those devices actually need.

When buying actually is the answer

I’ve spent money on this problem. More than once, and not always well.

I’ve bought bigger, more powerful routers on the theory that I needed 5-gigabit ports, or Wi-Fi 7, or whatever the next number was — and perhaps that’s true. If you have a laptop or a phone that can actually use Wi-Fi 7, and you have the internet speeds to feed it, and the device can get a clear signal, then yes. Go for it. It’s worth it.

But run the arithmetic first, and run it on your own bill. If you’re paying for 100 Mbps, which is a common basic package, or 300 on the tier above it, then ask why you’re buying a router built to move several thousand. You’ll max out your connection either way. A basic setup would have maxed it out too.

I’ve also spent money on mesh systems, the ones where you plug little units in around the house on the theory that they’ll fill the weak corners. They do work. That’s not the complaint. The complaint is that I bought some of them before checking whether I needed them, and before checking whether my internet speed could even take advantage of the result. Before you assume, check. You’re wasting money if you don’t really need it.

There’s a lot to weigh here, and none of it is urgent. Which brings me to the part that is.

The one router worth replacing on the spot

Here’s the single point I’d make before any of the rest: if you have a router you don’t ever recall updating, or you know there’s never been an update available for it, consider replacing it.

No software is perfect. A router that stopped receiving fixes is a permanent, unlocked door onto your home network, and that isn’t a theory. In May 2025 the FBI warned that criminals were hunting exactly these devices to build proxy services, and its guidance was blunt: “If the router is at end of life, replace the device with an updated model if possible.” In April 2026 the Bureau went further, reporting that Russian military intelligence had been exploiting vulnerable home and small-office routers since at least 2024, changing their DNS settings to read traffic that the owners believed was encrypted. Same recommendation, first line: upgrade end-of-support devices.

The test isn’t the router’s age. It’s whether the manufacturer is still shipping fixes for it. A three-year-old router still getting updates is fine. A nine-year-old one that stopped years ago is a liability, however well it seems to be working.

And if you rent your router from your internet provider, you don’t have to guess. Call and ask whether the unit is still being maintained and updated, or whether they have a newer model you can swap it for. That call is usually free and it’s frequently a straight upgrade.

What I’d do: Move it first and measure honestly. Check the update status this week regardless — that part isn’t about speed.

What I’d skip: Buying anything on a hunch. Match the router to your actual internet plan and your actual devices, not to the number on the box.

You’re done when…

  • The router is off the floor, out of any cabinet, and roughly central to where people actually sit
  • You’ve counted the walls between it and the weak room, and you know which one is the expensive one
  • You have a before number and an after number, taken from the same spot
  • Nothing important is parked directly underneath it
  • You know whether your router still gets updates, and you’ve asked your provider if you rent it

If the numbers barely moved and the path is genuinely brutal — a detached office, a brick wall, a finished basement — then it’s a hardware problem after all, and you’ll be shopping with a much better idea of what you’re shopping for.

Ten minutes. Then go put the furniture back.
